Group Ostinato

Room 10 prepared, practised, and performed four bars of four beat rhythms. Group by group they played their rhythms to the rest of the class. Then, they taught their classmates one of their bars until everyone could join in. This created an ostinato (a continually repeating musical phrase or rhythm) from one of each group's rhythms.

Playing Parts

Room 6 used the piece Naughty Kitty Cat to look at keeping a beat while playing a rhythm over the top. Beat people had to concentrate to not be put off by rhythm people. The rhythm was quite tricky too as it had lots of eighth notes (quavers) in it. The biggest challenge was keeping the beat going while the rhythm part observed a rest.

We had he manuhiri today...Mrs Fraser joined Room 6 for Music

Kereru Rhythms

Team Kereru (Rooms 7, 8, and 9) have been playing four bar rhythms in groups on percussion. They practised and performed their arrangements to the class before teaching their pieces to each other using the rhythm symbols and names we have been learning. Kereru classes are great at sharing their Music learning; when Room 12 arrived today, Room 7 were keen to take the opportunity to sing with them and teach them te waiata Tēnā Koutou.

Percussion Practise

Room 5 have been learning how to play the different percussion instruments. We usually take 3 seconds to play however (loudly) we want but then focus on how to make the best sound with each instrument. They are great at waiting to choose an instrument and know exactly what to do with their instrument while waiting for others.

Everyone with instruments and ready to play!

Bow Wow Wow

Room 1 have been learning to play a rhythm and record it with symbols and rhythm names. They chose a percussion instrument and their favourite part of the four parts of the song Bow Wow Wow to play. The piece sounded really good played in four parts with everyone remembering when to come in and nearly no sounds on the rests!

Beats on Bonjos

Room 2 have been learning to keep to the beat. We used The Best Day of My Life by American Authors as it has a distinctive beat. We kept the beat going by clapping while moving around the circle to take turns on the large drum.

Term 1 2016

For Term One our focus in Music is beat and rhythm.

We connect with our Music learning through movement, dance, speech, and drama. We listen to pieces of music in different styles/genres to discuss the elements of music, our music appreciation, and instrument recognition.

We are using untuned percussion instruments and body percussion to play given beats and rhythms as well as creating our own pieces and improvising sound situations (such as a story accompaniment or representation of something). We are practising recording rhythms using symbols and rhythm names.

We sing simple folk songs to practise our pitch matching and to help us with learning our rhythms, songs in Te Reo Māori and Samoan, and popular songs for the enjoyment of singing together.
